Highlights for this issue

• NEW — Research Café I, Tuesday, Nov. 19, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Pond Inlet: Degrees of Difference: A panel presentation featuring alumni from Brock's MA program in Social Justice and Equity Studies.
Visit the Research Café 
Five Brock graduates will draw from their education, personal and career backgrounds to share perspectives about the broad scope of work in social justice causes. The event is free and open to the Brock community and general public. The Faculty of Graduate Studies presents the café in partnership with the Social Justice Research Institute and the MA program in Social Justice and Equity Studies.

• NEW — Ethics 101 - Introduction to Research Ethics at Brock: The Research Ethics Office is holding a workshop on Thursday, Nov. 14, 1 to 3 p.m. in Cairns 207. This session will introduce the Brock community to the Research Ethics Board (REB) review process, and assist researchers with the submission of REB applications and interpretation of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2) guidelines. All graduate students are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to reb@brocku.ca or extension 3035.

• NEW — Fulbright Canada Awards: Fulbright Canada has posted a recording of its recent webinar. Click here to find out more about eligibility requirements, programs for students and scholars, the timeline for application, enrichment opportunities, and how to prepare a competitive application.

NEW — MTCU-WSIB Insurance Program for unpaid work placements — Students required to undertake an unpaid work placement in order to graduate from their approved post-secondary program are eligible for WSIB coverage sponsored by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The Ministry has streamlined the WSIB claims process. Revised guidelines and Questions and Answers can be found on the Ministry's public website

• NEW — 2014 Sangster Award: The Canadian National Committee for CODATA (CNC/CODATA) is accepting applications for The Sangster Award. This award, valued at Can. $3000, will enable a graduate student enrolled in a Canadian University, or a graduate who has completed his or her graduate degree within three years of the application deadline, to attend and present their work at the 24th International CODATA Conference (jointly organized with World Data System), SCIDataCon 2014, "Data Challenges for Global Sustainability /Future Earth", November 2 to 5, 2014, in New Delhi, India.

• IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship: This year, five War Memorial Scholarships, valued at $15,000, will be awarded to students attending Canadian or Commonwealth universities. Applicants must be Canadian citizens and in at least the second year of their doctoral program. Applications are to be made only online.
Deadline: Complete applications must be received by IODE Canada on or before Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013

•  DAAD German Academic Exchange Service: Information about scholarship opportunities, including PhD Research Grant, is available on the DAAD website.

• Parkinson Society Canada offers grants,fellowships, and student awards for Parkinson's research. One-year Pilot Project Grants will provide up to $45,000.

Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships at Harvard University: The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) is pleased to announce this fellowship program for which candidates must be nominated. Up to three fellowships will be awarded to students from Canada for graduate study at Harvard University. Frank Knox Memorial Fellows are selected on the basis of outstanding academic excellence, strength of character, and potential for leadership in their fields. The fellowship pays full Harvard tuition and mandatory health insurance fees and provides a stipend sufficient to cover the living expenses of a single Fellow for a 10-month academic year.

• Brock Library Open Access Publishing Fund: Open to Brock faculty, graduate students and postdocs. The purpose of this grant is to assist researchers in disseminating their research broadly via an Open Access (OA) journal. A minimum of four awards will be granted, to a maximum of $2,500 each [Total funds = $10,000]. This Grant is intended to support researchers with limited or no funding. If an alternate funding source is available that permits payment of submission fees (e.g. a research grant), that source must be used before applying to the OA Publishing Fund.

• Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO): HEQCO has introduced an Opportunities to Innovate Fund, and has invited organizations and individuals to submit interesting project ideas for potential funding. To be considered for funding, proposed projects must be consistent with at least one of the three mandated areas of HEQCO activity: Accessibility, Quality or Accountability of postsecondary education.

• Wildlife Preservation Canada: Canada's New Noah — The full scholarship includes travel, living and training expenses to enable the New Noah to participate in the Durrell Post-Graduate Diploma in Endangered Species Recovery designed to provide you with the field experience and species and human resource management skills you need to be able to run wildlife conservation projects. Based exclusively on the island of Mauritius (Indian Ocean) this course consists of four weeks of intensive theory and more than 12 weeks of practical experience, based within 'live' species and habitat recovery teams working to save species around Mauritius and its offshore islands.

• Connect Canada
A new internship program that links graduate students and Canadian companies for research placements. Categories of research include: natural science, engineering, economy, social science, health, environment and ethics. Each internship is four-to-six months and is completed by a graduate student at the master's, PhD or post-doctoral fellow level. Connect Canada internships are funded by $5,000 from the company, which is matched by Connect Canada for a total intern stipend of $10,000 for the entire internship.

Academic and Professional Development


Academic and professional development program for graduate students provided in partnership with nine campus units.

• NEW – Blueprint for Graduate Students — The Graduate Students Association (GSA) and Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) have partnered with the Blueprint program to offer 'entrepreneurial thinking' graduate students with an opportunity to grow and launch their innovative business ideas. Graduate students* from ALL faculties are encouraged to apply.

Much more than a business competition, Blueprint is a program that provides students with business advice, mentorship and startup funding and services. The estimated combined value of the services and prizes available are up to $30,000**. 
To submit your business idea and to take advantage of the great opportunities offered through the program, students can simply visit the Blueprint website  and follow the application instructions.
Deadline to apply: November 18
     *Recent alumni (no more than 2 years since graduation) are eligible. Team applicants are encouraged but at least 50% of the team members must be Brock University students, or recent alumni.
     **Not a lump sum, prize winners may be awarded different amounts of money and services as decided by the Blueprint advisory committee.

• NEW — Tuesday, Dec. 10 - Graduate Skills Mash-up — the Academic Professional Development Partners are offering graduate students a series of 'short sessions' academic skills booster. Time and location to be announced.

• Promote your workshops to graduate students with us! If you are hosting a workshop or event related to graduate student professional development, that may interest graduate students from within or outside of your faculty, please send us notice to have your event posted on our calendar.
OR, Submit the event directly, by simply uploading the details into the online form

The number of participants can be monitored and capped through our online registry. Specific learning outcomes and the competencies addressed that align with your workshop or information session.

• REMINDER — Call for Visual art-works (of all kinds): Are you a graduate student and visual artist looking to express your creative talents? In your investigation of life, do you have images that capture your research interests? The Academic + Professional Development partners are looking for visual art-works that convey the concepts of curiosity, intrigue and innovation; or simply reflect the graduate student experience.

•  Call for Participants: Global Gathering: Focus on the Americas: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Cairns Complex 207 and the Scotiabank Atrium.
Brock International and the Office of Research Services invite the Brock community to participate in Global Gathering — a platform for faculty, staff and students to share and learn about ongoing or potential activities, projects, and interests in a country or an area in the world. The first Global Gathering will be focused on Americas – including U.S. and across continents to South America.
The event is part of the International Education Week, Nov. 18 to 22.

• Call for Papers - ISF 2013, International Scientific Forum, Dec. 12 to 14, 2013, Tirana, Albania: The Forum will be a great experience for its participants and a good opportunity to discuss their topics of interest, to present their personal opinions and academic achievements, as well as to transfer knowledge about good practices. It will be an opportunity to found new scientific collaborations and to publish scientific papers, which is a part of the conference materials and a special edition of highly reputable scientific journal.

• Call for papers: Sakarya University will host the International Conference on Quality in Higher Education (ICQH 2013), December 12 to 14, 2013, in Sakarya, Turkey. The ICQH aims to provide
a multinational platform where the latest trends in quality in higher education is presented and discussed in a friendly environment.
