• NEW — MTCU-WSIB Insurance Program for unpaid work placements — Students required to undertake an unpaid work placement in order to graduate from their approved post-secondary program are eligible for WSIB coverage sponsored by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The Ministry has streamlined the WSIB claims process. Revised guidelines and Questions and Answers can be found on the Ministry's public website

• NEW — National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) Graduate Experience Survey: Graduate students with disabilities are invited to participate in an online survey examining the experiences of, and barriers faced by, graduate students with disabilities across Canada. • NEW — IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship: This year, five War Memorial Scholarships, valued at $15,000, will be awarded to students attending Canadian or Commonwealth universities. Applicants must be Canadian citizens and in at least the second year of their doctoral program. Applications are to be made only online.
Deadline: Complete applications must be received by IODE Canada on or before Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013

• NEW — DAAD German Academic Exchange Service: Information about scholarship opportunities, including PhD Research Grant, is available on the DAAD website.

• Parkinson Society Canada offers grants,fellowships, and student awards for Parkinson's research. One-year Pilot Project Grants will provide up to $45,000.

• Traditional Fulbright Student Awards: Fulbright Canada offers opportunities for Canadians to study, research, collaborate, and teach in the United States including the Traditional Fulbright Student Awards. The Award is for graduate students, prospective graduate students, and junior professionals who wish to enrol in a graduate studies program, continue their current course of graduate study and research, or pursue an independent research project for a period of nine months in the United States.
Competitions close November 15, 2013.

• Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships at Harvard University: The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) is pleased to announce this fellowship program for which candidates must be nominated. Up to three fellowships will be awarded to students from Canada for graduate study at Harvard University. Frank Knox Memorial Fellows are selected on the basis of outstanding academic excellence, strength of character, and potential for leadership in their fields. The fellowship pays full Harvard tuition and mandatory health insurance fees and provides a stipend sufficient to cover the living expenses of a single Fellow for a 10-month academic year.

• The Centre for International Governance Innovation Post-Doctoral Fellowship: CIGI welcomes post-doctoral fellows to join its highly collaborative community of academic and policy experts. CIGI, based in Waterloo, Ontario, is a premier Canadian think tank on international governance, with a focus on policy-relevant research. Its thematic focus is framed by four research programs: Global Economy, Global Security, Energy and Environment, and Global Development.
Recent PhD graduates — who have either secured or are in the process of securing external post-doctoral funding — are encouraged to apply for residency at the CIGI Campus. Upon becoming a CIGI Post-Doctoral Fellow, individuals will be eligible to benefit from supplemental research support and will experience extensive professional development opportunities.

• Hosei International Fund (HIF) Foreign Scholars Fellowship: Students enrolled in a doctoral degree program are invited to apply to the program to carry out non-degree research programs at Hosei University under the direction of and/or in cooperation with Hosei faculty and researchers.
Research areas include studies in the humanities, social or natural sciences, or engineering as deemed acceptable by Hosei.

• Brock Library Open Access Publishing Fund: Open to Brock faculty, graduate students and postdocs. The purpose of this grant is to assist researchers in disseminating their research broadly via an Open Access (OA) journal. A minimum of four awards will be granted, to a maximum of $2,500 each [Total funds = $10,000]. This Grant is intended to support researchers with limited or no funding. If an alternate funding source is available that permits payment of submission fees (e.g. a research grant), that source must be used before applying to the OA Publishing Fund.

• Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO): HEQCO has introduced an Opportunities to Innovate Fund, and has invited organizations and individuals to submit interesting project ideas for potential funding. To be considered for funding, proposed projects must be consistent with at least one of the three mandated areas of HEQCO activity: Accessibility, Quality or Accountability of postsecondary education.

Participants will deepen their sustainability understanding, enhance their confidence as leaders, and be empowered to develop or advance meaningful sustainability projects.

• Wildlife Preservation Canada: Canada's New Noah — The full scholarship includes travel, living and training expenses to enable the New Noah to participate in the Durrell Post-Graduate Diploma in Endangered Species Recovery designed to provide you with the field experience and species and human resource management skills you need to be able to run wildlife conservation projects. Based exclusively on the island of Mauritius (Indian Ocean) this course consists of four weeks of intensive theory and more than 12 weeks of practical experience, based within 'live' species and habitat recovery teams working to save species around Mauritius and its offshore islands.

• Council of Canadian Academies Internship Program: The Council provides graduate students at all levels, as well as post-doctoral fellows, an opportunity to gain relevant experience in the area of science and technology policy through its Ottawa-based internship program. During the six-month program, interns engage directly in the Council's assessment process – from panel meeting organization to research and writing, document production, and Board approval processes.
The program offers an internship stipend of $17,625 that is intended to offset living expenses for the period of the internship.
The Council of Canadian Academies is an independent, not-for-profit corporation that supports evidence-based, expert assessments to inform public policy development in Canada.
Deadline: October 31 for the winter session (beginning in January)

• Connect Canada
A new internship program that links graduate students and Canadian companies for research placements. Categories of research include: natural science, engineering, economy, social science, health, environment and ethics. Each internship is four-to-six months and is completed by a graduate student at the master's, PhD or post-doctoral fellow level. Connect Canada internships are funded by $5,000 from the company, which is matched by Connect Canada for a total intern stipend of $10,000 for the entire internship.

• NEW — Call for Participants: Global Gathering: Focus on the Americas: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Cairns Complex 207 and the Scotiabank Atrium.
Brock International and the Office of Research Services invite the Brock community to participate in Global Gathering — a platform for faculty, staff and students to share and learn about ongoing or potential activities, projects, and interests in a country or an area in the world. The first Global Gathering will be focused on Americas – including U.S. and across continents to South America.
The event is part of the International Education Week, Nov. 18 to 22.

• Global Multidisciplinary e-Conference 2013 dedicated to the UNESCO's World Science
Day: The European Scientific Institute, ESI and its partners have joined the UN celebration of World Science Day by launching the Global Multidisciplinary e-Conference 2013, November 10 to 12, 2013. This academic scientific event will gather researchers from universities, companies and government executives from all around the globe. The participants will present their scientific attainments in various academic disciplines in online sessions. The event will connect different cultures and attitudes thus contributing to: knowledge transfer, sharing best practices and research skills improvement.

Chance to win prizes of $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place.
Contest is open until November 29 and winners will be announced in March.

• NEW — October 2013 edition of SAP (Scientific and Academic Publishing) newsletter: Review a list of newly published articles on the SAP website.
