• NEW — Graduate Studentship Award – Prostate Cancer
Canada (PCC) is offering a limited number of awards that provide a stipend for outstanding graduate students studying prostate cancer. The goal of the Graduate Studentship Award program is to provide funding to doctoral students to advance their research studies. This program aims to support high potential trainees to develop their skills in conducting prostate cancer research. The expectation is that following this period of research and training, award recipients will continue their research careers in prostate cancer.
To be eligible, applicants must: be accepted into a full-time doctoral program in Canada which commences by the effective date of the award (January 2014) at an eligible
institution; have completed more than one year of their doctoral studies; be at least one year from submission of doctoral thesis.

Registration deadline: September 25, 2013

NEW — Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships at
Harvard University: The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) is pleased to announce this fellowship program for which candidates must be
nominated. Up to three fellowships will be awarded to students from Canada for graduate study at Harvard University.  Frank Knox Memorial Fellows are selected on the basis of outstanding academic excellence, strength of
character, and potential for leadership in their fields. The fellowship pays full Harvard tuition and mandatory health insurance fees and provides a stipend sufficient to cover the living expenses of a single Fellow for a 10-month academic year.
Interested candidates will find the information needed to apply for this program by visiting the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada's website.

• Deadline Sept. 6 — The Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock Medal: The award recognizes graduating students who have demonstrated characteristics of: leadership, courage, innovation, inspiration and community involvement. The Chair of the Board of Trustees, or designate, will present the medals at convocation.
For the Fall Convocation, there is only one medal for the whole of the university at the undergraduate level and one from the graduate level.

•  The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS): The program was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. It is worth $50,000 per year for three years and is available to both Canadian and international PhD students studying at Canadian universities.

• The Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship: The Agricultural Institute of Canada
Foundation proudly announces this prestigious new award. This scholarship is open to agricultural science students from the province of Alberta. Students may be enrolled in any post-secondary institution within or outside the province of Alberta. In 2013, two awards will be granted: $10,000 Masters level (1) and $15,000 PhD level (1).
Candidates must hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residence status in Canada and be enrolled in their graduate program for at least one semester beyond the application deadline.

• Traditional Fulbright Student Awards: Fulbright Canada offers opportunities for Canadians to study, research, collaborate, and teach in the United States including the Traditional Fulbright Student Awards. The Award is for graduate students, prospective graduate students, and junior professionals who wish to enroll in a graduate studies program, continue their current course of graduate study and research, or pursue an independent research project for a period of nine months in the United States.
Competitions open May 1, 2013, and close November 15, 2013.

• The Centre for International Governance Innovation Post-Doctoral Fellowship: CIGI welcomes post-doctoral fellows to join its highly collaborative community of academic and policy experts. CIGI, based in Waterloo, Ontario, is a premier Canadian think tank on international governance, with a focus on policy-relevant research. Its thematic focus is framed by four research programs: Global Economy, Global Security, Energy and Environment, and Global Development.
Recent PhD graduates — who have either secured or are in the process of securing external post-doctoral funding — are encouraged to apply for residency at the CIGI Campus. Upon becoming a CIGI Post-Doctoral Fellow, individuals will be eligible to benefit from supplemental research support and will experience extensive professional development opportunities.

• Hosei International Fund (HIF) Foreign Scholars Fellowship: Students enrolled in a doctoral degree program are invited to apply to the program to carry out non-degree research programs at Hosei University under the direction of and/or in cooperation with Hosei faculty and researchers.
Research areas include studies in the humanities, social or natural sciences, or engineering as deemed acceptable by Hosei.

• Brock Library Open Access Publishing Fund: Open to Brock faculty, graduate students and ostdocs. The purpose of this grant is to assist researchers in disseminating their research broadly via an Open Access (OA) journal. A minimum of four awards will be granted, to a maximum of $2,500 each [Total funds = $10,000]. This Grant is intended to support researchers with limited or no funding. If an alternate funding source is available that permits payment of submission fees (e.g. a research grant), that source must be used before applying to the OA Publishing Fund.

• Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO): HEQCO has introduced an Opportunities to Innovate Fund, and has invited organizations and individuals to submit interesting project ideas for potential funding. To be considered for funding, proposed projects must be consistent with at least one of the three mandated areas of HEQCO activity: Accessibility, Quality or Accountability of postsecondary education.

Internships

Council of Canadian Academies Internship Program: The Council provides graduate students at all levels, as well as post-doctoral fellows, an opportunity to gain relevant experience in the area of science and technology policy through its Ottawa-based internship program. During the  six-month program, interns engage directly in the Council’s assessment process – from panel meeting organization to research and writing, document production, and Board approval processes.
The program offers an internship stipend of $17,625 that is intended to offset living expenses for the period of the internship.
The Council of Canadian Academies is an independent, not-for-profit corporation that supports evidence-based, expert assessments to inform public policy development in Canada.
Deadline: October 31 for the winter session (beginning in January)

• Connect Canada
A new internship program that links graduate students and Canadian companies for research placements. Categories of research include: natural science, engineering, economy, social science, health, environment and ethics. Each internship is four-to-six months and is completed by a graduate student at the master’s, PhD or post-doctoral fellow level. Connect Canada internships are funded by $5,000 from the company, which is matched by Connect Canada for a total intern stipend of $10,000 for the entire internship.

Grad Plus is an academic and professional skills training service for graduate students provided in partnership with nine campus units.
Here’s some Grad Plus news to share:
1.  Social Innovation Research Associate Program (SIRAP) — A
new joint pilot program sponsored by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Niagara Connects:  Brock’s Social Innovation Research Associate training program (SIRAP).
The aim of the pilot is to provide graduate students with direct community-based research experience that is meaningful, relevant and complements their graduate education.
A team of Graduate Student Researcher Associates will co-develop the Living in Niagara Report: a comprehensive community indicators project. Alongside community experts and leaders, Graduate Student Research Associates will co-generate new indicators of community wellness while proposing vital and innovative solutions addressing social, economic, environmental and cultural challenges within the Niagara community.
This program is a valuable research opportunity for graduate students from ALL disciplines and will appeal to students  with both sectoral and cross sectoral research interests.

Scientific Institute, ESI and its partners have joined the UN celebration of World Science Day by launching the Global Multidisciplinary e-Conference 2013, November 10 to 12, 2013. This academic scientific event will gather researchers from universities, companies and government executives from all around the globe. The participants will present their scientific attainments in various academic disciplines in online sessions.
