• Mapping the New Knowledges — upcoming events:

Research Café on Tuesday, Feb. 12: The Brock community has an opportunity to learn about the trans-disciplinary research under way by faculty and graduate students involved in the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC).  A panel presentation, "Environmental Sustainability with a Changing Climate," will be held from 4:30 to 6:45 p.m., Pond Inlet. NEW — Graduate Student Research Conference — Call for Proposals is now open:
Graduate students are invited to submit proposals to participate in the eighth annual conference, to be held on Wednesday, April, 10, Plaza Building, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year, students can participate in one of three ways:
• Display a poster
• Give an oral presentation
• Take the 3MT® (Three Minute Thesis) challenge — this is a new event open to students who are very far along in their Master's or PhD thesis work (i.e., those who will be convocating this June, or those who are in the final stages of writing their thesis)
For the second consecutive year, Youth University will offer a research prize for oral and poster presentations at the conference on topics pertaining to child and adolescent research.

REMINDER — Research Celebration: On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the Office of Research Services is hosting a day long "Research Celebration" at Guernsey Market that highlights the wide array of research being conducted at Brock. Posters will be displayed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with researchers being on-hand to discuss their work from 2:30 p.m. onwards. Awards will be presented at a ceremony beginning at 4 p.m.

NEW — Annual TA Award: The Centre for Pedigogical Innovation announces that nominations are now open for the three annual awards: Senior TA Award (value: $500); Graduate TA Award (value: $400) and TA Award (value: $300). Additional information, guidelines and nomination form is available online

• NEW — Brock's Institute for Scientific Computation:
The institute is pleased to announce that the second Workshop on Scientific Computation will be held at Brock University, August 20 and 21, 2013. The workshop, jointly sponsored by Kobe University, will provide an opportunity for faculty and students to present papers on computational aspects of their research, inviting feedback from experts outside of their fields.
There is no registration fee, but meal tickets will be available for purchase upon registration. Therefore, for meal planning purposes, please email Stuart Rothstein (srothstein@brocku.ca) to indicate your plans to attend the workshop.

• NEW — CAGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Awards: The Call for Nomination is open. The awards recognize Canadian doctoral dissertations that make unusually significant and original contributions to their academic field. There are two awards: one for engineering, medical sciences and natural sciences; and one for fine arts, humanities and social sciences. The Awards are granted by the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) and are sponsored by Proquest-UMI (University Microfilms International). They include a $1,500 prize, a Citation Certificate, and travel expenses of up to $1,500 to attend the 2013 CAGS Annual Conference (Montréal, Québec).

• President's Surgite Award: 
To recognize students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas:
Demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team.
Did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation.
Made a significant contribution to student life at Brock.
Provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community.
The President's Surgite Award will be awarded to 10 recipients and will include a Certificate of Recognition and a cash value of $1,000. Seven awards will be presented to Undergraduate Students and three awards will be presented to graduate students.
Deadline: Applications must be received by Monday, Feb. 11, 4:30 p.m. in Student Awards and Financial Aid

• Scholarship to Study in France:
Offered by the Embassy of France in Canada, in partnership with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), this competition, which is open to all disciplines, offers scholarships for study in France at the master's, doctoral, or post-doctoral level.

Brock Library Open Access Publishing Fund: Open to Brock faculty, graduate students and postdocs. The purpose of this grant is to assist researchers in disseminating their research broadly via an Open Access (OA) journal. A minimum of four awards will be granted, to a maximum of $2,500 each [Total funds = $10,000]. This Grant is intended to support researchers with limited or no funding. If an alternate funding source is available that permits payment of submission fees (e.g. a research grant), that source must be used before applying to the OA Publishing Fund. • 2013 Henry Mandelbaum Graduate Fellowship: Supported by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, the fellowship recognizes excellence in social sciences, humanities or arts. It is awarded to a full-time graduate student at a publicly-assisted Ontario University who has demonstrated academic excellence, shows exceptional academic promise, and has provided significant community service in his/her university career. Financial needs of students may be a selection factor.

Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO): HEQCO has introduced an Opportunities to Innovate Fund, and has invited organizations and individuals to submit interesting project ideas for potential funding. To be considered for funding, proposed projects must be consistent with at least one of the three mandated areas of HEQCO activity: Accessibility, Quality or Accountability of postsecondary education. Internships


Connect Canada

A new internship program that links graduate students and Canadian companies for research placements. Categories of research include: natural science, engineering, economy, social science, health, environment and ethics. Each internship is four-to-six months and is completed by a graduate student at the master’s, PhD or post-doctoral fellow level. Connect Canada internships are funded by $5,000 from the company, which is matched by Connect Canada for a total intern stipend of $10,000 for the entire internship.

Call for papers: International Conference on New Horizons in Education (INTE 2013), June 25 to 27, 2013, Rome, Italy

The conference aims to provide a multinational platform where the latest trends in education can be presented and discussed in a friendly environment with the aim to learn from each other. Prospective presenters are encouraged to submit proposals for papers and posters/demonstrations that offer new research or theoretical contributions. Presentations should be in Italian, Turkish, English, Czech, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian languages and should address both theoretical issues and new research findings.
