Highlights for this issue

• NEW — Internal Awards and Scholarship applications are due February 1, 2013.  Please refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies website for a list of scholarships and awards and application instructions.

• NEW — Mackenzie King Open and Travelling Scholarships are due February 1, 2013.  Please refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies website for eligibility and application instructions.

• NEW — President's Surgite Award: 
To recognize students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas:
Demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team.
Did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation.
Made a significant contribution to student life at Brock.
Provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community.
The President's Surgite Award will be awarded to 10 recipients and will include a Certificate of Recognition and a cash value of $1,000. Seven awards will be presented to Undergraduate Students and three awards will be presented to graduate students.

Applications must be received by Monday, Feb. 11, 4:30 p.m. in Student Awards and Financial Aid

• NEW — Scholarship to Study in France: Offered by the Embassy of France in Canada, in partnership with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), this competition, which is open to all disciplines, offers scholarships for study in France at the master's, doctoral, or post-doctoral level.

• NEW — Brock Library Open Access Publishing Fund: Open to Brock faculty, graduate students and postdocs. The purpose of this grant is to assist researchers in disseminating their research broadly via an Open Access (OA) journal. A minimum of four awards will be granted, to a maximum of $2,500 each [Total funds = $10,000]. This Grant is intended to support researchers with limited or no funding. If an alternate funding source is available that permits payment of submission fees (e.g. a research grant), that source must be used before applying to the OA Publishing Fund. • NEW — 2013 Henry Mandelbaum Graduate Fellowship: Supported by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, the fellowship recognizes excellence in social sciences, humanities or arts. It is awarded to a full-time graduate student at a publicly-assisted Ontario University who has demonstrated academic excellence, shows exceptional academic promise, and has provided significant community service in his/her university career. Financial needs of students may be a selection factor.

Application Form

The Canadian Transportation Research Forum (CTRF) Scholarships for Graduate Study in Transportation: The CTRF, in cooperation with several other organizations, is offering scholarships worth between $4,000 and $6,000 each, for the academic year 2013-2014. Preference is given to (but not limited to) graduate students applying for and entering master’s or PhD programs and current graduate students in the process of choosing research topics for a thesis or graduating essay. Field of study may be in business administration, engineering, economics, geography, law, planning or related fields.

2013 Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation of Canada Scholarship for Canadian Women: The foundation fosters and promotes higher education among Canadian women. This scholarship is proudly offered annually to any Canadian woman who is active in her PhD studies. Past recipients come from diverse disciplines of study, and are changing the world through their remarkable efforts and leadership.

Soroptimist Foundation of Canada Grants for Women Award: The foundation annually offers several $7,500 grants to female graduate students in Canada to assist them with university studies that will qualify them for careers focused on improving the quality of women's lives. Examples include, but are not limited to, providing services, providing legal counselling and assistance, counselling mature women entering or re-entering the labour market, counselling women in crisis, counselling and training women for non-traditional employment, and positions in women's centres.

Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarship in Mineral Economics (valued at $3,500):
This award is intended for students interested in mineral economics/commerce. Bachelor and Master of Economics students, as well as those taking a MBA are eligible to apply.

Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO): HEQCO has introduced an Opportunities to Innovate Fund, and has invited organizations and individuals to submit interesting project ideas for potential funding. To be considered for funding, proposed projects must be consistent with at least one of the three mandated areas of HEQCO activity: Accessibility, Quality or Accountability of postsecondary education. Semester or one-year grant for study or research in Austria in the areas of: Natural Sciences; Technical Sciences; Medicine; Agriculture and Forestry, Veterinary Medicine; Social Sciences, Law and Economics; Humanities and Theology; and Fine Arts.

Internships


Connect Canada

A new internship program that links graduate students and Canadian companies for research placements. Categories of research include: natural science, engineering, economy, social science, health, environment and ethics. Each internship is four-to-six months and is completed by a graduate student at the master’s, PhD or post-doctoral fellow level. Connect Canada internships are funded by $5,000 from the company, which is matched by Connect Canada for a total intern stipend of $10,000 for the entire internship.

Call for papers: International Conference on New Horizons in Education (INTE 2013), June 25 to 27, 2013, Rome, Italy

The conference aims to provide a multinational platform where the latest trends in education can be presented and discussed in a friendly environment with the aim to learn from each other. Prospective presenters are encouraged to submit proposals for papers and posters/demonstrations that offer new research or theoretical contributions. Presentations should be in Italian, Turkish, English, Czech, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian languages and should address both theoretical issues and new research findings.

Mapping the New Knowledges Conference

Mark your calendar now for the 2012-13 Mapping the New Knowledges events:

• Research Café II: Tuesday, Feb. 12, 4:30 to 6:45 p.m., Pond Inlet

The Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC) will present “Environmental Sustainability in a Changing Climate” with research presentations by several faculty researchers and graduate students. As part of the event, the ESRC will issue a Call for Posters from faculty and graduate students interested in presenting research on the theme of environmental sustainability in a changing climate. You’re invited: The Environmental Sustainability Research Centre will hold its third annual Rodman Hall Seminar with the featured topic: Meanings and Measurements of Sustainability. Everyone is welcome to attend on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Rodman Hall, 109 Saint Paul Crescent, St. Catharines.
