A Note from the Doctor
The IMD Doctor

Welcome to the February edition of the Brock Boarding Pass!

Winter is in full effect here in Niagara and has graced us with a blanket of snow and frigid temperatures. However, staff at IMD have been beating the winter blues by participating in a variety of winter activities like tobogganing, skiing, skating, and snowboarding.

This month, among other things, we bring you the story of an international student from Trinidad and Tobago – a sister city to St. Catharines. We also answer some of your questions about applying to scholarships at Brock, along with information about a unique math competition!

For those of you that are on a sub-tropical island, or are snowed in and can't make it to our Spring Open House on March 2nd, we will be hosting a Virtual Open House on March 10th on our Facebook and Twitter pages for you to attend! Read on to learn more.

Happy Reading!

International Student Spotlight

Brittny from Trinidad and TobagoHi, my name is Brittny Hamilton and I am currently a first year Math and Science student at Brock. I am from the beautiful twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, in the Caribbean, which is also the sister city to St. Catharines! It is a big change coming from such a hot climate to the chilly climate of St. Catharines, but it is all a part of the wonderful new opportunities and learning experiences which I have received so far at Brock.

Both the staff and the students here at Brock are very friendly and approachable. My professors all go the extra mile to make themselves accessible to each and every student, which is great because they really get to know you! The most challenging thing about making the transition from high school in the Caribbean to university abroad, is that you don’t really know anybody when you first arrive, but here at Brock the students are very outgoing and it is easy to make new friends and learn about the Canadian culture!

Working hard and studying is an important part of university life, but here at Brock I would encourage all international students to get involved with the different councils, groups, volunteer opportunities and sports offered here. I recently tried intramural football, a totally new and fun experience for me!

Brock provides the facilities for us not only to develop our minds from an academic standpoint, but to also learn about the outside world and to gain new experiences, developing us as individuals. My first year has been memorable so far, and I am excited to see what the next the four years holds in store for me here!

Program Spotlight: Student Awards and Financial Aid

Scholarship Application Deadline - March 31stOur Student Awards and Financial Aid Office recognizes student success and supports students in financial need. They understand how busy the school year can be, and how stressful finding financial aid is. To support students they have developed one application for all awards and bursaries that Brock University has to offer, it is called OneApp.

What is OneApp?
OneApp is a special application Brock has specifically designed to help students apply for all the awards and bursaries that Brock has to offer. The application is a one stop shop where you fill out information about yourself, your finances, your parents' finances, what your expenses will be as well as any volunteering or activities you are involved in. This way the Student Awards team is able to match you to as many awards as possible.

How do I apply?
You can find OneApp under SAFA on your Student Self Serve page at my.brocku.ca. Simply begin the application by filling out all the information required, and saving it after you have completed each section. Once you have completed the OneApp, the rest is up to the Student Awards department. You can check your eligibility and the status of your application by going to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Award Status page on the Applicant and Student Self Serve page of my.brocku.ca

Do I have to do anything after I submit OneApp?
The Student Awards department is responsible for screening and matching applicants to specific awards, but there are some awards that require more information or even additional application questions. You can check if you are eligible for any of the awards that require some extra steps by going to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Award Status page on the Applicant and Student Self Serve page of my.brocku.ca. If some awards require extra work it will be listed on this page!

When is the deadline for applications?
For new students the deadline to apply and submit supplemental information is March 31, 2014! To ensure that there are no problems with your OneApp, be sure to submit it as soon as possible!

Remember to watch out for our new Award Wednesdays on social media where we will be profiling different International Awards for incoming students!
