Date: Thursday, December 4, 2014
Time: 3 to 5 pm
Location: The Community Room at Mahtay Cafe (241 St Paul Street, St. Catharines)

Join SJRI for an afternoon that celebrates and explores some of the different ways in which social justice research is being done at Brock University! This event will feature a panel discussion, poetry, and much more--a great way to wrap up the term.

Opportunity to organize SJRI symposium

The Faculty Steering Committee of the SJRI, in collaboration with the editors of Studies in Social Justice, invites notices of interest (NOI) from affiliated SJRI members in mounting a funded symposium in Fall 2015 around an intellectually-significant thematic/problematic, that is transdisciplinary in nature and relevant to social justice. SJRI offers: a core budget of up to $25,000; financial administration of the project; logistical support; knowledge mobilization know-how and infrastructure; and assistance with supplementary grant-writing if needed.

To apply, submit a one page NOI by Nov 15, 2014 to Maria Callaghan, SJRI Administrative Coordinator. (More info)

Call for SJRI grants applications

The Fall 2014 competition for the SJRI Grants program is open to affiliated SJRI members. This includes both the Seed Grants ($7000) and Local Engagement Grants ($2000). Rachel Hirsch, SJRI Projects Facilitator, is available to work with you on your SJRI grant application. She works at arms-length from the adjudication process.

Completed applications should be emailed to Maria Callaghan, SJRI Administrative Coordinator, by November 17. (More info)

Introducing "SJRI Originals"

In this edition of the SJRI E-Bulletin, we offer a new opportunity to produce and share original content: “SJRI Originals” is a selection of short online articles. SJRI members and friends who would like to share their engagements with transdisciplinary social justice scholarship are invited to submit articles (500 words) to Rachel Hirsch indicating alignment with one of three possible themes:

  1. Experiencing Social Justice – for those that have encountered transdisciplinary social justice in action.
  2. Understanding Social Justice – for those who have conducted transdisciplinary social justice research.
  3. Pursuing Social Justice – for those who are looking to collaborate on a proposed transdisciplinary social justice project.

Experiencing Social Justice

“Witnessing the Peoples’ Social Forum” by Sherri Vansickle | One of the most memorable presentations for me was two Algonquian women who presented about the Families of Sisters in Spirit. (Read more)

“Witnessing the Peoples’ Social Forum” by Blaire Hinsperger-Fox | Three women, one from Ottawa, one from Toronto and one from China currently residing in Toronto spoke about their experiences with sex work and working with sex workers, specifically migrant sex workers. (Read more)

“A paradox of hope?” by Vanessa Sloan Morgan | Whiteness is a privilege, a sense of entitlement, a cultural hegemony that goes often unquestioned in the settler colonial context of the Canadian state. And it was indeed present at the event. (Read more)

Understanding Social Justice

“Success in organizing for a living wage” by Sadhna Jayatunge | Lobbying government and engaging employers is important, but living wage campaigns succeed when they build a people-power base and engage with faith communities and families experiencing in-work poverty. (Read more)

Pursuing Social Justice

“A public forum for transdisciplinary social justice” by Rachel Hirsch and Mary-Beth Raddon | Transdisciplinarity can operate as a social justice practice when it disrupts systems of dominance by revealing and questioning knowledge hierarchies. (Read more)

What is SJRI?

The Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) was established Fall 2013 as a leader in advanced transdisciplinary social justice scholarship, innovative knowledge mobilization strategies, and community-university partnerships. SJRI is a vibrant collective of 46 faculty members from 15 academic units at Brock University brought together by a shared concern for pressing social justice issues and supported by a Projects Facilitator (Dr. Rachel Hirsch) and Administrative Coordinator (Maria Callaghan). A Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) governs SJRI representing a range of cross-disciplinary perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and education.
