- Call for Oral or Poster Proposals — Open until Friday, Feb. 19.

- 3MT® Preliminary Round, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Pond Inlet followed by GSA Social — Come out and watch this year’s 3MT® presentations. The preliminary round will determine the top presentations to advance to the finals on conference day, April 7. 

Following the preliminary presentations, stay around for the GSA Social, 6:30 to 11 p.m., beer tasting brought to you by Old Tomorrow and live music by the group By Design.

• REMINDER - Call for Applications to The President's Surgite Award: Ten awards (three to graduate students and seven to undergraduate students) are presented annually to recognize Brock students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas:
· Demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team.
· Did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation.
· Made a significant contribution to student life at Brock.
· Provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community.
Deadline: Monday, Feb. 8, 4:30 p.m. at Student Awards & Financial Aid, Schmon Tower 402.

Scholarships/Awards/Grants

• NEW — University of Guelph Brock Doctoral Scholarship: The scholarship of up to $120,000 ($10,000 per semester for up to 12 semesters) is awarded to the successful entering doctoral student at the University of Guelph. The principal selection criterion is sustained, outstanding academic/research achievement, as demonstrated by transcripts, publication record (as appropriate to the discipline), and participation in scholarly activities such as conferences and symposia.
Deadline: Monday, Feb. 15

• NEW — Sangster Award: The Canadian National Committee for CODATA (CNC/CODATA) is accepting applications for The Sangster Award. This award,
valued at $3,000 (Cdn.), will enable a Canadian graduate student enrolled in a Canadian university, or recent graduate (within three years of graduation and of Canadian citizenship), to attend and present his or her work at the 25th International CODATA Conference (jointly organized with World Data System), SciDataCon 2016, "Advancing the Frontiers of Data in Research", September 11 to 13, in Denver, Colorado. It is expected that the award winner's field of study will support the general objectives of CODATA, namely, to help foster and advance science and technology through developing and sharing knowledge about data and data-related activities.
Deadline for Applications: Thursday, March 31

• Jim McDonald Scholarship for Northern Research: The Canadian Northern Studies Trust (CNST) recently announced this new award, valued at $5,000. The scholarship is available to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada who is currently enrolled in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities as these pertain to Canada’s north and its inhabitants. Community-based-research, interdisciplinary research and local Aboriginal collaboration will be given special consideration, as will those that can demonstrate a specific focus to their project. The Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Research (ACUNS) sponsors the award with the support of the family of the late Dr. Jim McDonald.
Deadline: January 29, 2016.

• 2016-17 Canadian Northern Studies Trust Student (CNST) Awards: The call has been released for over $1 million worth of northern-focused research awards offered through the CNST and the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies. A significant portion of the support is for graduate student scholarships in northern science research, supported by the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. Please refer to the ACUNS Website or ACUNS Awards and Scholarships for more information or contact the Chair of the Brock Northern Studies Committee Chair, Assistant Professor Kevin Turner, at kturner2@brocku.ca

• Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) Scholarships in Water Resources: The Canadian Water Resources Association annually offers five scholarships awarded to graduate students whose programs of study focus on applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources. The value of the awards ranges from $1,500 to $5,000. The CWRA Scholarship Committee will accept only one application from any department in a Canadian university or college. Therefore applicants must provide a statement from the chairman/director of the department that verifies that the application is the one being submitted from that program for the graduate scholarship.

• Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Scholarships: The GFOA encourages the pursuit of careers in government finance and management. In the interest of assisting students in advancing in these areas, the GFOA offers student opportunities through the following scholarships.

The Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship competition is for students who are enrolled full-time in a graduate program that prepares students for careers in state and local government finance. One scholarship of $13,000 is available for award in 2016.
The Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship competition is for undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled full-time in a university or college preparing for a career in state and local government finance in the United States or Canada.
Two scholarships of $8,000 each are available for award in 2016.
The Government Finance Professional Development Scholarship competition is for graduate students who have been admitted on a part-time basis to a graduate program in public administration, (governmental) accounting, finance, economics, business administration or a related field. Four scholarships of $8,000 each are available for award in 2016.
The Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship competition is for minority students of public administration, (governmental) accounting, finance, political science, economics or business administration (with a specific focus on government or nonprofit management) at the upper-division undergraduate or graduate level. One scholarship of $8,000 is available for award in 2016.

• W.L. Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarships – deadline Feb. 1, 2016

• Ontario Trillium Scholarship — deadline Feb. 15, 2016

• Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) - deadline Feb. 3, 2016

• NEW — Henry Mandelbaum Graduate Fellowships (Doctoral and Master's) for Excellence in Social Sciences, Humanities or Arts: The fellowships (one at each of the doctoral and master's levels) are awarded to full-time graduate students at publicly assisted Ontario universities who have demonstrated academic excellence, show exceptional academic promise, and have provided significant community service in his/her university career. Financial needs of students may be a selection factor.
The award was established in 2011 by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) to honour their retired Executive Director.
Doctoral award value: $5,000; Master's award value: $2,500.
The doctoral level recipient will be expected to produce and deliver a paper within one year of receiving the award to the OCUFA Board on a topic related to or resulting from his/her thesis or dissertation research.

The Mitacs Accelerate Program: Funding is provided to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to apply his or her specialized expertise to business-related research challenges. Partners can be either for-profit businesses or not-for-profit organizations. Note that after August 31, 2015, this program will become the primary delivery agent for federally supported graduate-level industrial research and development internships and will replace the NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships program.

• Ontario's TalentEdge Fellowship Program (TFP): The program provides support for Ontario-based PhD graduates and Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs) to work on industry-driven research and development projects. This program is open to PDFs across all disciplines and areas of specialization. Fellowships may be academic (college or university), or company based.
Each 12-month TalentEdge fellowship is valued at $85,000.
Applications may be submitted at any time and will be reviewed throughout the year.

• Canadian Institutes of Health Research IHSRP Travel Awards: IHSPR will provide travel awards in 2014-2015 for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and new investigators to attend and present their research at meetings, conferences (including international conferences) and/or symposia that align with the Institute's mandate and advance their professional development and/or knowledge translation initiatives in health services and policy research.

NEW — Niagara Social Justice Forum, "Building Solidarities, Saturday, Feb. 6: The Social Justice and Equity Studies Graduate Program at Brock invites grad students to attend the 9th annual Niagara Social Justice Forum on Saturday, Feb. 6, a day-long program of activities such as concurrent workshops, performances, exhibits and information tables in a fair-like atmosphere. This event typically attracts over 150 people from both campus and the community and explores a wide range of issues. Activities are proposed and organized through an open call to campus and community-based individuals and groups committed to social justice. The Forum is free and open to students, faculty, and staff at Brock, and to the public. Free parking, vegan meals and childcare are provided with registration. They are still looking for volunteers to help throughout the day. If interested, please email NSJF@brocku.ca

NEW — 2016 World Chinese Bridge: Each year, the Confucius Institute at Brock University participates in the Ontario Universities’ preliminary competition in late April leading up to the 2016 World Chinese Bridge, usually in July in Beijing – a global competition to showcase university students’ Chinese language proficiency and unique cultural skills.  If you are a Brock student with a competitive spirit and genuine interest in Chinese language and culture, please contact the CI Team as soon as possible at qyin@brocku.ca

 • GSA Health and Dental 2016 Winter Term Opt-in: The cut-off for students who want to add their families, or part-time/new students who want to sign up for coverage, is Friday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m. We are now offering online opt-in using Visa or Mastercard, available on the Student VIP site, under "Opt-out/Opt-in" on right hand side menu. Students must register on the Student VIP site before you can access this option. Students can also fill in the Student Enrolment Opt-In form  and drop off to the GSA Office, which a cheque or money order.

• GSA Housing Resource: Check out a GSA Student Housing Resource Manual to assist graduate students in locating housing at Brock University.
