Report from the Dean’s Office

It is hard to believe that we are now past the half-way point of the winter semester given how much snow we still see on the ground. But that hasn’t slowed our Faculty down over the past two months with lots of great things continuing to happen.

Recognizing Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Awareness Month

As a growing profession, therapeutic recreation enhances the lives of individuals, igniting smiles and making the world a healthier place to live.

Suzie Lane has shared her Therapeutic Recreation experience, learn more about the field on the Faculty Insider blog:

FAHS Students to Benefit from Newly Awarded Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jublilee Scholarships

Thanks to the hard work of Dr. Lisa Kikulis, Emily Allan and Rachel Corbett, the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences in partnership with Commonwealth Games Canada and Rowing Canada was recently awarded funding through the Rideau Hall Foundation, Community Foundations of Canada and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada for a project entitled for a project called Sport Leaders International Internship Program. The Queen Elizabeth Scholarships will be awarded to students in FAHS programs to support student internships of up to four months related to major international events (e.g., Youth Commonwealth Games, All African Games) and sport for development initiatives in Commonwealth Countries. A big thanks to Dr. Lisa Kikulis, Emily Allan and Rachel Corbett for taking the lead on developing and submitting this winning proposal. The funding will further the Faculty’s focus on experiential learning, particular in international settings, and will provide tremendous in-the-field learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students from across our Faculty. Further details regarding logistics and student applications to follow.

Open House

A big thanks to all faculty, staff, and students who attended this year’s Open House. Once again, the FAHS side of the gymnasium was a hub of activity. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Lucie Thibault who coordinated the event for FAHS and also to the academic advisors, Mike Armstrong, and Jon Therrien for their support.

Nursing Accreditation

The Department of Nursing was recently awarded a 7 year accreditation by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing. This is this highest level of accreditation available to Nursing programs in Canada. Congratulations to all faculty and staff for receiving this significant level of distinction and for facilitating such a positive review.

2015 Application Numbers

At this point, applications into first year programs in FAHS are up by 3.7% compared to last year’s overall total. This is particularly significant given the downward trends in applications across the University sector and for Brock overall (down 7%). You can view current applications, registrations, and targets by individual programs by visiting the Dashboard on your mybrocku.ca site. Our overall first year target intake for our Faculty is 855.

Program Prioritization

The first public draft of the Senate’s Program Prioritization Committee is now available under your mybrocku.ca tab. Thanks to all the Department Chairs and others who helped to input the necessary data and complete the assessment forms for each of our Faculty’s programs. Also, a big thanks to Dr. Nota Klentrou who chaired the committee on behalf of Senate. This was a major undertaking.

Martin Tammemagi 2015 FAHS Research Excellence Award

Graduate Program Receive Approval to Proceed to Next Stage

The self-study for the Masters of Professional Kinesiology has been approved by ARC and Senate and will move on to the next stage of approval. Reviewers from the Ontario Quality Council will be visiting campus in the spring to conduct their assessment and report. Thanks to all of you who helped in the development of the self study and for providing input into the content.

The self-study proposal for the Masters of Public Health program received approval from ARC and will be moving forward to Senate in the near future. Pending Senate approval, reviewers from the Ontario Quality Council will visit campus in the spring to conduct their assessment of the proposed program.
