Headcount
The official headcount of majors was officially released in early December by Institutional Analysis. The Faculty of Applied Heath Science is now the second largest Faculty on campus with a total of 3424 majors throughout our various programs. This is an increase of 3% over last year’s total. The Department of Health Sciences saw the biggest increase of any department across campus with a 17.6% increase in total majors.
All of our departments are now in the top 1/3 of all programs across Brock with respect to total majors:
- #3 Department of Kinesiology (n = 1054)
- #6 Health Sciences (n = 829)
- #10 Sport Management (n = 580)
- #13 Recreation and Leisure Studies (n = 442)
- #18 Nursing (n = 356).
These are very healthy numbers and are a testament to the high quality and demand of our programs. Congratulations to everyone!
Here is a summary of the overall report from Institutional Analysis:
- Total student head count has increased by 0.7% from 18,688 in fall 2013 to 18,824 in fall 2014; The head count of full-time students has increased by 0.1% while the number of part-time students has increased by 4.6%
- Total undergraduate student headcount has increased by 0.9% from 16,999 in fall 2013 to 17,154 in fall 2014; The head count of full-time undergraduate students has increased by 0.4% while the number of part-time students has increased by 4.5%
- Total graduate student headcount has decreased by 1.1% from 1,689 in fall 2013 to 1,670 in fall 2014; The head count of full-time graduate students has decreased by 3.0% while the number of part-time students has increased by 5.1%
- The total number of international students has increased by 6.5% from 1,765 in fall 2013 to 1,880 in fall 2014; The total number of undergraduate international students has increased by 11.6% while the total number of graduate international students has decreased by 3.1%
Donation to Brock Niagara Penguins
The Brock Niagara Penguins, a program for athletes with a disability operating through the Centre for Healthy Development, received a very generous gift of $10,000 from the Lawson Foundation. The donation is in recognition of the positive impact the Penguins program has had in the Niagara Region for the past 8 years.
Brock University Award for Excellence in Teaching for Early Career Faculty
Congratulations to Dr. Paula Gardner who was the recipient of this year’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for Early Career Faculty awarded by the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation. Her experiential efforts in class has led to her early success outside the classroom; including an intergenerational community project that focused on examining the age-friendliness of the Niagara region. Dr. Gardner received her much deserved award at the CPI’s Annual Tribute to Teaching Ceremony on December 4th. http://www.brocku.ca/brock-news/?p=31144
Ontario Graduate Policy Research Challenge (OGPRC)

Brock FAHS celebrates the success of top students in 2014
Over 700 students in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences achieved level of academic excellence to be recognized on the Dean’s honour roll this past year. A special thanks to Dr. Lucie Thibault, Gloria Davis, and Mike Armstrong for helping to organize the event and to Dr. Nota Klentrou for speaking on behalf of the graduate program. I would also like to thank Todd Erskine (Health Sciences ’99) who was the guest speaker. Nursing Pinning Ceremony

This Faculty Insider marks the 1 year anniversary of my first Faculty Insider sent out at the beginning of my term as Interim Dean. Faculty News
Operational donation set to support disability programming at Brock
Niagara Recycling has made an operational donation to Brock University that will help to fund seven community programs that support individuals living with disabilities. The $180,000 donation over the next four years will fund a co-ordinator position that will have a direct impact on the operation of the programs administered by Brock.

First year Sport Management students get connected with industry professionals
For the third year, Dr. Julie Steven’s hosted a first year Sport Management conference to get students connected with industry professionals. The Sport Management Professional Development Conference is part of the course ‘Professional Engagement in the Sport Industry’ (SPMA 1P94).
With more than 160 students in attendance, 15 industry professionals presented on strategies to build employability skills and opportunities that exist in the field of sport management.

Martin Tammemagi breaks through with cancer screening research
A Brock University scientist’s new way of identifying people most likely to get lung cancer could help cash-strapped health care systems devote more of their resources to patients who need it most. Brock epidemiologist Martin Tammemägi’s new method uses already-existing data to create a “risk threshold” that greatly helps doctors determine who should be prioritized for lung cancer screening. As published in the Dec. 2 issue of the American medical journal PLOS Medicine, the risk threshold is also better than current methods at detecting lung cancer in early stages.

Sport Management students learn to lay down the law in Sport Court
Sport Court challenges students to argue real case scenarios as part of their Sport and Law course (SPMA 2P96) at Brock University. This year 105 students spent the term preparing a factum detailing the arguments of their parties and preparing to present them in court.

Jamie Mandigo signs agreement with the Guatemala Olympic Committee
Jamie Mandigo visited Guatamala to present sporting initiatives to the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG). The sporting initiatives have been used for the past 10 years to successfully reduce youth violence in El Salvador. The agreement was signed to help prevent youth violence and promote a healthy lifestyle for children.

SPMA Grad continues WestJet Christmas miracle tradition
Greg Plata and his team at WestJet are back to making Christmas miracles a reality. This time they have taken Christmas cheer to an international audience. While the 2013 ‘real-time giving’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIEIvi2MuEk) video has gained over 37 million views. The 2014 ‘Spirit of Giving’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-BKX3G0BpQ) video is well on its way to having a viral marketing impact.
